Works Of A Secret Shopper

  • A secret shopper is a person who works for an organization as an agent for getting quality feedback about the consumer satisfaction levels that it is able to offer, as well as, the efficiency of its front office staff. The agent goes to a shopping mall or any other venue specified by his employer and does not disclose his identity or the purpose of his visit to anyone. He goes to the business venues to get a first hand understanding of the quality of the front end processes going on there. He observes each and every activity minutely, and makes a report based on the information that he gathers. He submits the report to the senior officials of the firm, who act upon this feedback to improve their front office performance.

Although the work of a secret shopper does not require the agent to have any specialized academic qualifications, people with experience are always preferred. The person who works as an agent should be able to form an unbiased opinion of whatever he observes in the front offices. For example, while passing an opinion about a consumer service executive, a consumer himself or about the maintenance of the front office, he should be able to back up his opinions with fair and justified arguments. He should be able to assess if he is being fair in his judgments about the different people he comes across and the different things that they do.

The work of a secret shopper is a highly enjoyable one. One gets to visit busy shopping malls where he can buy items of his choice and interact with different people. He might also get to visit movie halls and other venues of entertainment. He can be asked to spend a couple of nights in a restaurant and dine there by his employers, he might also be asked to visit recreation parks where he can have a great time. For all these visits, the employing firm pays the bills for the agent. But the agent needs to deliver good results. The firms expect the agents to provide them with accurate feedbacks and there is pressure on them to perform well. As the work is in high demand there is an abundance of agents and only the best ones are retained by the firms.

A secret shopper needs to prove his worth to his employer within the first few days of his employment, otherwise he stands a high risk of being fired by his employers. Hence, though superficially a work filled with fun, one needs to perform his duties with a serious attitude towards them. A lot of college graduates take up assignments during their vacations to make some quick pocket allowance. But they get rewarded only when they perform their tasks sincerely.

Usually people go for working as agents on a part time basis. However, if a person devotes about eight to ten hours a day for this work, he can expect to make a good income. A secret shopper should make at least ten to twelve business visits per day to make good money. He should love working outdoors. This work is a dynamic one and having some prior knowledge of relevant markets and front office practices can be of great help to the person who opts for this work.
