People love finding places where they feel like they belong. That is why we secretly secretshop bars and restaurants, to gain that feeling of acceptance. As normal customers we do not get paid to shop, but the techniques are the same. And they come on naturally. It is our animal instincts that tell us how to evaluate a retail business, a restaurant, or a bar. If you do not believe so then test your secret shopping instincts the next time you go out on the town. Find a new place to eat or drink. Like a place you pass by everyday and always wanted to try but never did. And go to a bar or restaurant that no one talks about. You do not want to walk in with biases or certain expectations. Otherwise, the secretshop will fail. The idea is to get you out of your comfort zone to fully open your senses to the experience.

Secret shopping is just like what every customer does when they walk into a restaurant for the first time. As soon as they enter, they are creating judgments. They are on a secretshop mission without even realizing it. First, customers check out the atmosphere. They judge the ambiance in the waiting area and look around at the tables to see if patrons are enjoying themselves. They secretshop the host or hostess, their first contact. This is the most critical part of any sale. The greeting could set the mood for the entire evening. If it is good, customers will brush off any small errors that might occur. If it is bad, customers will multiply the magnitude of small errors and find excuses to have a miserable time. Then, customers judge the wait staff like meeting someone for the first time, because in a sense they are. They judge their appearance, their personality, and their knowledge. People cannot help it. We are constantly told not to judge people, however that is impossible. It is programmed in our brains and it cannot be deleted. So you do not have to be a secret shopper to secretshop. People do it anyway.

We do not secretshop at our regular hangout. We did at first, but the bar or restaurant must have passed the test. Once you get over the awkwardness of experiencing something new, judging stops and there is no reason to secretshop anymore. Though we have certain expectations, but they are not evaluated unless the routine is disrupted. This is more of an alarm than a secretshop judgment. Instead of making a ruling we want to know why.

This is what secret shoppers do. They are forced out of their comfort zone to secretshop local businesses they never been to. Their instincts take over so naturally they do not notice. This is just like normal shopping customers. Customers naturally secretshop whenever they experience something new to them. It is beyond their control.

So have this in mind when on the job search. You could become a paid shopper. You are more than qualified to secretshop, so get paid to shop.
