Sometimes called anonymous shopper, the job of the mystery shopper is to pose as any other normal customer and visit an establishment for evaluation of a situation or service in return of a fee and reimbursement of the amount spent for doing such shopping. Anonymity is the first condition of such a job and this is the point one gets paid for. Generally it has been seen that a person doing a job gets vigilant and careful when told about evaluation and if this person is an employee, he or she gets even more vigilant because the condition of employment is attached to such an evaluation. But the same person may react differently in a regular situation when the condition of evaluation is not involved. This is the moment that the mystery shopper is paid to evaluate. Since an establishment is run by the employee and the direct interaction with the customers are made by them their attitude and behavior means a lot to the business.
The mystery shopper is any person and this is especially paid attention to because the commonality of this shopper holds the key to good evaluation. Any whiff of the purpose with which this person is sent can ring the alarm bells of the employees and the natural condition that was to be evaluated would get lost. This is not what the company will pay for. A proper evaluation means that the employee will treat the special shopper the same way he would have treated any other shopper. This brings out the nature of the treatment and this treatment can break or make a business. A very good establishment can see a downward graph if the behavior of the employees irritate the customers. Similarly the behavior alone can build permanent relationships and a loyal customer base insuring steady business for years.
The mystery shopper can reveal many things that a normal inspection of an establishment by the company would not reveal. Even the surprise visits are not enough as the persons visiting to inspect are recognized by the employees and they leave no stone unturned to please them and get the full marks in customer handling. Sometimes these inspection reports, whatever may they show are not even analyzed correctly and any amount spent on it thus goes waste. But the money spent on survey through special or anonymous shoppers is well spent as the observations made and submitted by the shoppers are evaluated by the specialists and they even make suggestions for improvement and even arrange for staff training. In fact the special shopping industry has grown into a regular business and it is flourishing day by day with the expansion of the service industry.
