The Secret to Shopping for Green

  • When most people go shopping they do not realize their shopping choices affect the environment. There is no way around it. Everything you buy affects the Earth in some way or other. Everything comes from the Earth. However, some choices have a lesser impact and educating yourself about different choices can allow you to make a difference in protecting the environment.

Be very conscious that you are buying recycled products when you are shopping. Today, many items made from paper and plastics are recycled materials. Other products like motor oil, tires, and automobile parts may have also been recycled. When shopping look for labels indicating that the product has been recycled or made from recycled parts. You do not have to go to a huge furniture warehouse for furniture shopping. There are still great furniture pieces and bargains at used furniture shops.

When you go shopping, consider buying in bulk or multi-packs. This can reduce packaging waste created by the manufacturer. Sometimes the packaging is recyclable, so do not immediately throw it in the trash can. Put it with your cardboard and paper recyclables.

Instead of shopping at the mall or at a huge department store, you can find great deals and authentic clothes at a local thrift store. Be a trend setter. Bring old fashions back in style. At least you will not show up at a party wearing what everyone else is wearing.

Take a break from shopping. Shopping has become a ridiculous hobby for many humans. Most of the time, it is pointless and not necessary. Instead invent a new hobby, trade with friends. Instead of buying brand new products, swap with friends or family. They may find clothes appealing that you no longer like to wear and vice versa. This hobby is better than shopping because it is free and the clothes are new to you.

It is very common for people shopping at the mall to be struggling with multiple bags from shopping at numerous stores. If you are planning a big shopping day, get a big shopping bag at the first store you buy something from. This way you can just stuff everything else you buy into one bag. It is easier to carry and better for the environment. While grocery shopping, when the bagger offers paper or plastic, say neither. Bring your own bag. You can buy reusable canvas bags to put your groceries in. Not only is this better for the environment, they will not break and cause a big mess from dropped eggs.

How else can you make a difference from shopping? Buy energy efficient items. Look for an energy efficient logo when shopping for electronics such as TVs, CD players, DVD players, and computers. Energy efficient products reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also, do not forget to check for gas efficiency when purchasing a new vehicle. Not only will energy efficient products help save the environment, they will help you save money on your monthly utility bills.

Shopping for a car can be very confusing. There are a lot of decisions to make regarding comfort, safety, style, performance, and price. Lately, many people are thinking about energy efficiency while shopping for a vehicle. So should you. Consider shopping for an electric or a hybrid car. You can help reduce emissions that pollute the air. Energy efficient cars are rated at 32 miles per gallon or more.
