We have all heard of the saying the customer is always right. In customer service this is true even if you think the customer is wrong. I think a big part of customer service is making the customer feel that you have done everything to satisfy them. Cellular Solutions took a big hit in the customer service area.I bought a new cell phone from EBay a couple months ago. I was in the transition from moving and I lost my charger to the phone. A friend and I went to the mall to get a charger for the phone. We didn’t want to get the charger directly from the cell phone company because it would be a little bit more expensive. To make a long story short, the charger didn’t work for the phone. We tried to charge the phone for about one week. In their defense, they did post a no refund policy. However, it couldn’t be seen unless you were right up on the sign. We brought the charger back to get either a refund or an exchange. We showed the sales person the charger and the phone. He plugged the phone up to the charger tester. I tried to show the sale person that even though the phone said battery charging the phone wasn’t actually charging. The sales person went on to say that he couldn’t do anything for me. He also accused of me of breaking the charger before I brought it back. There was several customer service lessons learned from this situation that will also apply to secret shopping business.First, the sales person didn’t listen to the problem that I was having. He was too concerned about proving that charger did work. He also was unprofessional when he accused me of breaking that charger and bringing it back just to get a refund. I understood the no refund policy but he offered no solution to satisfy the customer. I believe when you work in customer service, you should always be professional. I believe that you should always try to make the customer feel that you have done everything possible to satisfy the situation. Today’s secret shopping blog is from our colleague Jeanette, who has done her share of secret shopping calls and has been mystery shopper a time or two herself.
A couple Sundays ago, we were swamped with people calling in about problems at several different storage locations. The gate was out of order, the office had inexplicably closed early, units were flooding- just to name a few of the issues we were being called about.
I compassionately and earnestly attempted to resolve these issues, and when unable to expressed my sympathy and concren. I offered whatever assistance I was able to and attempted to commence our conversation.
The call should have stopped at this point. However, as is expressed in the clich, “give ‘em an inch and they’ll take a mile”, my regards only seemed to perpetuate the conversation and encourage complaining.
What frusterates me is that there are issues that we, at the call center have no control over. I have had many a caller threaten litigation, demand me to call the managers at home after office hours, I’ve even had a few classy callers curse me out until I hung up!.
Unfortunately, working in this industry there are times we come across people who treat us in a less than human manner. America’s society of instaneous gratification doesn’t help either. If we didn’t answer for these facilities after hours, all the caller would get would be a recorded message. We are people, too and at the very least, deserve respect.
However, some people view those serving them as only having one role: to accommadate their every whim and need. They forget that Joe at K-Mart has a wife and two little boys at home. It doesn’t occur to them that Mary at the storage place left 5 minutes early to get her daughter to soccor practice.
I strongly believe that everyone should work in the service industry at least once in their life, early on, in order to develop a sense of empathy and patience for the people who will be helping them. This would not only ease the burden we bear, but would be a benefit society as a whole

I talked to quite a few people who are looking to start new businesses at the ISS self storage expo this week. Everyone of them thought that they would want to know what is happening during customer interactions in a new business. I find that often, people learning a business are quicker to use a great device like secret shopping than people who think they know their business already.
This doesn’t make a lot of sense. You would think that established business leaders would want to know as much about their customers’ experiences, too. You would think they would be working on improvements and new initiatives that would need to be proofed.
Maybe complacency is the biggest competitor to a secret shopping company.
