Shadow Shoppers – The Mystery Continues

  • Customer service industry employees be on your toes. Whether you work in a restaurant, bank, movie house or night club, there are strange happenings afoot, and they are much more common than you may have previously imagined. Do not let your bad days affect your work performance. Remember to keep your personal life personal, and put a big, welcoming smile on your face each and every time you interact with a customer of any kind. If you do not, the results could be less than satisfactory. More likely than not, at some point during one of your shifts somewhere down the line, you will encounter the mysterious shadow shopper

    No one has ever seen this strange and elusive creature, so we have no idea what one looks like. Perhaps they come in the form of a middle aged woman in sweat pants. Or maybe they show up as a couple. Male or female, young or old, rest assured, they do, indeed, exist. From some unknown location within your work facility, they have the capacity to watch with eyes as sharp as an eagle. Perhaps the shadow shopper has superhuman powers of observation, and even more interestingly, powers of invisibility as well. Perhaps not. You may have even interacted with one, maybe even today.

    What is the intention of this inconspicuous shadow shopper ? Are their visits friendly? Or do they come with malicious intent? The research that has been done suggests that these visits are quite peaceful, and that they have only your best interests, and the best interests of your workplace, in mind. Contrary to the skepticism or sense of uncertainty that you may feel about their presence in your diner, hair salon, retail establishment or hotel lobby, they are there to help. Their mission is simple, to observe and to honestly record the tiny, yet important, details of their unannounced visit to your establishment.

    The shadow shopper has a phenomenal memory, and their eyes are keen. They pick up on subtle behavioral cues in addition to blatant impropriety. They report their findings with detailed descriptions of the quality of services rendered. If they encounter a staff member who is less than satisfactory, or if their visit to your establishment does not gain their favor, your superiors will be informed. In fact, if their whether their experience was positive or negative, your superiors will be given the details of the interactions, in a fair and non-biased way.

    The aim of this hidden shadow shopper is not to cause trouble for you in your employ. Rather, they are attempting to preserve your spot on the job ladder by allowing your superiors to address the perceived issues and complaints before a true customer or patron has been wrongly or unsatisfactorily treated. In the end, only you can present yourself in a friendly, helpful manner to customers when they walk through your establishments doors. With a respectful, optimistic attitude, there is no need to be nervous of these indiscernible guests.

    If you feel that you have been visited by one of these mysterious clients, breathe easy, and plan ahead for your next customer interaction. They could be sitting at your table, asking for directions, or returning items recently purchased. There is no need to seek them out, for they are a healthy addition to your employers plan for the advancement of the company standards. Be not afraid, just be courteous.
