serve us

  • Welcome to the secret shopping blog, our diary of the world of secret shopping.

I had a couple of really lousy customer service experiences yesterday. The people I dealt with were just plain rude. There is no excuse for not greeting people in your place of business, for ignoring customers who are trying to spend money or for being unhelpful. In one case I was buying something in an antique shop off of the sale table. I asked the lady at the counter if I could have a little box to put the purchase in. She said “no” because the item was on the sale table. She then explained that even though the item was marked $12.00, it cost her $38.00 and she was loosing money.

Why did I care about any of that? I was paying what she was asking. It was not my problem she was clearing the item. And she explained it in a rude manner. I felt like putting her in a time-out and grounding her for a week.

So rather than giving me a good experience I could go and tell people about, she made me never want to go in her shop again. Why didn’t she price the sale items to include a gift box? Why didn’t she put a sign on the table saying, “sorry gift boxes are $1.50 extra on sale itmes”? Why didn’t she just give me the gift box and let me have a good experience?

Maybe we should talk about “serve us” and not service. When people are spending money, they are saying “serve us”. What’s wrong with that?

    bye for now, Tron
