Selecting A Mystery Shopping Firm
-
As the necessity for mystery shopping is increasing by the day, there are a lot of firms that promise to offer the best agents available in a particular location. However, all firms are not genuine and one must follow certain guidelines while choosing firms. These are
• The firms might assert that their staff are the best in the industry and are unique in comparison to their contemporaries. In reality the people who generally join as agents work with these firms on a freelance basis and they work with a number of firms. Hence, it might so happen that the firm that one is opting for might not be having the best staff possible, but staff of the same performance level as many other firms in the locality.
• Many mystery shopping organizations claim that their staffs are well trained, but it is always better for the appointing firm to test the skills of the prospective candidates through demo assignments before appointing them. On the other hand, there are many firms that provide quality training to the people who enroll with them as agents. These firms specialize in providing training to candidates interested in working as agents. These candidates utilize their skills while working for different firms.
• All firms do not provide staff that are genuinely qualified and experienced to carry out their assignment successfully. Many mystery shopping organizations claim that they send agents only after selecting them carefully, but this is not so. They usually advertise about vacancies on the internet and allot the assignments at random to the enthusiasts. This process is generally automated and it works on a first come first serve basis and not on the legibility of the agents. Ideally, the firms that supply the agents are supposed to interview the candidates who register with them for different projects and assign them only those projects for which they are suitable. When the selection process is automated, the quality of the performance of the agents suffers.
• It should be remembered that the more specific and lesser the number of tasks expected from the mystery shopping agent, greater the chances are of his performing well. Many employers try to overload the agents with a lot of tasks. For example, a firm might ask the shopper to visit about ten retail outlets in a time slot of three hours. Now, this is too taxing for the agent. He might somehow manage to visit all the ten outlets in the given time slot, but he will not be able to remember whatever he has observed in each of the outlets. It is a better proposition to assign him about two or three outlets in the given period of time, so that he can assess the outlets accurately and report his findings.
• The application form that is given to the prospective candidates who are interested in taking up mystery shopping assignments should ask only for those details that are relevant. Asking for too many details can only complicate the process and confuse the applicant. The optional information can be collected at the time of interview. This will save time for the selector also significantly.
Working as an agent is not a very easy thing as many people assume it to be. It is serious work and the agent needs to have a knack for the job.
