There are various methods of conducting these surveys. Each type of product and store has its own specific characteristics. In general, the client conducting the mystery shopping programs selects shoppers from different areas of the town to act as the secret buyers. A list of questions is given to these buyers who are instructed to go to a particular store and shop around for the company products. The buyer is expected to give his assessment after the secret buying experience either in the form of a checklist or as a narrative or in the form of charts or graphs.
In its simplest form, the survey arranges the secret buyers to buy certain goods from a particular shop and then fill out a questionnaire or to attend an interview after the purchase in order to give his feedback on the mystery shopping programs .
