It is a myth that mystery shopping is done by units which are not doing well. If you observe the recent trends undercover shopping is used by all industries and even small scale units. Who does not want to make profits? If spending just a few dollars can do miracles then it is wise to try out the disguised shoppers. There are many reluctant owners who are not comfortable with the idea of their own employees being spied upon. This is usually done for the benefit of the company and indirectly it gives a boost to the employees. If the company does well, the employees stand to benefit too, as their incentives and bonuses tend to increase too. There are very few employees who resist mystery shopping . They understand that it is the benefit of them and they stand to gain in the long run, so why stop it.

There are several techniques employed by the companies that carry on disguised shopping assignments. Some of these techniques, such as the use of video cameras are usually not approved by the companies as they feel that there is an invasion in the privacy of the lives of their employees. However, the use of videos has become one of the best ways to do mystery shopping . This is one of the best proofs of the behavior of the employees. If such techniques are used then the problem of manipulation in the reports submitted by the shoppers can also be avoided. Shoppers who carry on the shopping, usually make reports later, instead they take mental notes of the observation.

There is another myth associated with mystery shopping which is often referred to as undercover shopping or shopping in disguise. As the name suggest there are many people who do not like to do this kind of job, because they feel they do not get due recognition. This is not true. Yes, in this kind of assignment you cannot disclose your identity. You are just playing a part, but just that mean that you are losing your identity? You can of course identify yourself, but the difference is that you need to disclose your identity as a shopper and not as a hired shopper. If you do so, your work wont be a success. But this is what you are supposed to do. This is why you are there. Moreover you are doing your job and you are being paid for it.

It is the work of the shopper to visit a restaurant or a retail unit, pose as a customer, make some purchases and make an observation about the ambience, services, products and people who are over there. The main job is to see if the customers are being taken proper care of. All this is put down in a report and submitted to employing company.
