    You will have to sing for your supper if you want to get ahead as a mysteryshopper. What makes somebody a great mysteryshopper as oppose to a great shopper? Of course, anything that makes an individual a great shopper helps when it comes to mystery shopping (and vice versa). But some qualities are particularly important in the world of professional mystery shopping.

    Some of these qualities might not have an obvious connection to mystery shopping at first glance, but they are the traits shared by an excellent mysteryshopper. Having the right combination of these qualities is the key to succeeding in this field. Fortunately, these strengths are not just inborn, they all can be developed. And as you increase your skill, you will be more and more able to hit the nail on the head and avoid those painful, swollen thumbs.

    Monitor Your Own Reactions to Sales Approaches
    Can you remember the last time a sales person persuaded you to buy something you did not want? If you are a mystershopper, spend time being extra-minded of the sales pitches (if any) aimed at you and what effect they had on you. You will likely discover some negative effects too. What does the company expect? Do they want their customers to feel pressured or manipulated or skeptical? A mysteryshopper needs to analyze specific words, phrases, ideas, and tone that jump out and provoke positive and negative feelings. Analyzing will improve the secret shopping experience and the salespersons approach.

    Discover People
    Learning what we all have in common as people is just as important as learning what makes us different individuals. If a mysteryshopper never took Psychology 101, pick up a used textbook at a bookstore. You might even find one at a garage sale. Here a mysteryshopper can discover interesting facts about people. You will get to find out about what makes the salesperson you are shopping do certain methods and what motivates him to conduct certain decisions. This can transfer into a well written report.

    Learn the Biz
    As with psychological insight, having a broad understanding of sales and customer service techniques helps the mystershopper by making him or her capable of giving a in-depth analysis. You do not have to be the sales person of the month, or a star waiter or waitress to give good feedback. But having a firm grasp of the fields you will be mystery shopping makes you more and more valuable and confident mysteryshopper.

    Be Assertive. But Do Not Roll Your Eyes
    There may be times when a myteryshopper is convinced the salesperson is a complete moron. If you are a mysteryshopper who provides instant feedback, you want to do the job right. It is not unreasonable to make your case, but do it calmly and respectfully. Be specific, give examples and offer alternatives. Hmm. I am afraid the way you said that might confuse people.  Here is another option we could consider. What if you said it this way instead? This salesperson in fact may not be a moron. Instead he had moronic training. It is up to the mysteryshopper to correct and retrain the salesperson. If you are truly alarmed about the salespersons sales approach, then put it in your report. Finally, look at it this way: you have got a fun job as a mysteryshopper. No wonder everyone wants to join in.
