Moms As Teachers

  • If you are a stay at home mom, you understand the necessity of coming up with a constant flow of activities, games, or whatever works, to keep your children happy and satisfied. Even if you are not a stay at home mom, but a mom who works and has to entertain your children in the evenings after school and work are over, you might find some of these suggestions helpful.

First of all, try not to think purely entertainment, if at all possible. A stay at home mom will know that with all the hours of the day that your kids are with you, if you are trying to continuously keep up with them and feed into their desire for amusement, it can become impossible. Instead, take control and find activities that are both useful and educational. If you plan them right, your children will not even realize they are being taught anything at all. For instance, most children love the opportunity to help out in the kitchen. Use this excitement in your kids to take some of the weight off of yourself. Teach them to make their own sandwiches for lunch. Teach them, with strict supervision, to make cookies or brownies for a snack. This is a great learning opportunity for them, and it helps you to get things done that are necessary, that you might not have had the time for before.

Spend time outdoors as much as possible. Whenever the weather permits, take your children to the park, to a scenic place, or even in your own back yard. Throw an old blanket down and have a picnic together. Afterward, you can get some much needed relaxation lying in the sun while watching your children play.

Crafts are also a good way to get children actively involved in educational and useful playing. Crafts help children learn how to put things together, they help with your childs hand eye coordination, cognitive organization skills, and creativity. And best of all, they are just plain fun! There are limitless numbers of crafts you can do with your children. Look online for ideas, or check out books at the library to get detailed instructions on different kinds of crafts.

If you are a stay at home mom and you have daytime hours available to you, you have probably already realized the great opportunity this is to visit the public library with your children. Reading is one of the greatest things you can teach your children to love, and much of this starts with a good and memorable experience at the library, starting at a very young age. Most libraries have special kids areas that are stocked with child sized tables and shelves, toys and movies, and books about anything your child could dream of. If you have hours to spend away some afternoon or are a stay at home mom, this is the ideal activity for you and your children to do.

One important thing to avoid, which a stay at home mom might find very tempting in day to day life, is too much television. This goes for mom and kids both. Television may be extremely interesting and even very educational for children, but it also greatly takes away from the quality time that you and your children can have learning things together. It is time that you will never get back again, time you will regret not having taken advantage of later on down the road.

Do not overly stress about planning perfect activities for your children. Children are easily entertained, and many times can amuse themselves. Just remember, instead, to cherish whatever time you have while they are still young!
