Merriam Storage Buildings Get A Face Lift

  • Luke had been contracted out to paint the exterior of three full rows of Merriam storage buildings. The structures were almost twenty years old, and though they were still in use, they were showing their age. A face lift was in order if they were going to keep up with the new, more modernized warehouse style Merriam storage buildings that were springing up in the area. The job was a sweet deal, because Luke did not have to do it alone. He had plenty of manpower in his two younger brothers, Chase and Nick.

Together, the three of them could accomplish anything that they set their minds to, regardless of the situation. They had gotten themselves into and out of some pretty curious situations over the years, like the time when they got their grandmother’s station wagon lodged in the fork of a tree when Luke was fourteen. It had been Chase’s idea to drive Grandma’s car, but Luke was behind the wheel on that one, and took the blame as well. Being the oldest, he had taken the blame for man of his siblings antics, but he knew it was almost always well deserved. Luke was the artistic one, the one who put thought into the aesthetics of a project, whether it was a row of Merriam storage buildings or an outdoor kitchen. He preferred natural building techniques over prefab any day and had an eye for symmetry and color.

Chase was the builder of the family. A mechanic by trade, He could construct or deconstruct anything from a weed eater to a diesel engine. He had brute strength and stamina going for him. This job was going to require several full days in the hot Kansas sun, and it was not a time of year when they were going to find relief in Mother Nature. Besides, any sudden rainstorms would ruin the proposed paint job on the outside of the Merriam storage buildings. they welcomed the cloudless, sunny skies, even if it was going to be shooting the mercury up well into the nineties. Chase would have no trouble in the heat, and no doubt he would be the one to poke fun at the other two, hot and exhausted, as their strength wound down before his.

Nick, who worked in a call center, was not at all used to such manual exertion, and he was going to have the worst time of it, but hanging out and supporting his brothers and painting the Merriam storage buildings was something that he always wanted to be able to do, and he was willing to go the distance and see how far he got, if nothing else.

The three of them got together over pizza one night at Nick’s house, to discuss the protocol for painting the Merriam storage buildings, the proposed color scheme, and any changes that needed to be taken into consideration. When it came time to do the job the three of them worked in tandem, helping each other out, anticipating each others needs and meeting them with no argument or even much explanation, as they all knew each other so well they basically knew what the other was thinking anyway. It was an easy job, and they finished in only two and a half days, which was a full day earlier than expected. Either way, they still got paid the same amount of money. A few hours later they were shooting pool and watching baseball on the big screen, pleased with a good job, well done.
