Got away again

  • Welcome to the secret shopping blog.

Today I did three in-person shops of three different storage facilities in Miami. I wanted to see how people sell self storage in this market.

I did one of my cruel but effective acid tests. I went in around lunch time and looked at my watch a lot. I played, “I’m on my lunch hour and I don’t have much time”.

The first store manager was renting a unit to a customer. He was having fun with the customer and doing the move-in routine. He had an assistant behind the counter who must have been getting ready to go to lunch, because he ignored me as I waited and slipped out the door. The manager handed me a price list and asked me to look at it while he finished with the people he was helping. He asked me to wait while he was about to take the new customers to show them their unit and finish the move-in routine. I told him I’d check back and not to worry about it because I had the price list and I left the store. I was a fish that got away.

At the second store the manager locked the front door behind me and took me up to show me a unit. At least he asked me a few qualifying questions while giving me prices. I said “Thanks” and that I had to get back to work. He said “Ok” and let me get away, too.

The last manager I messed with at least asked me what I would be storing and helped me picture what a 5×15 might look like. I Said I had to get back to work and wrote down the price he gave me on a card and left. He let me get away, too.

No one tried to seal a deal with me. No one tried to get my name and contact info. No one had me fill anything out. No one asked to reserve a unit for me.

    It was an interesting day.
