Nowadays mystery shopping has become a readily available career opportunity for people. The reason is very clear. It does not require one to be highly qualified academically and neither does it require one to be technically sound or have loads of experience to back him. It is a job that seems to be driven mostly by intelligence, a keen sense of observation and most importantly commonsense. But all people who take up this profession do not seem to be performing well. This is because though this job can be performed satisfactorily with general skills, just like all other jobs, there are certain desirable qualities that can make a professional in this career really successful.
To be a top ranking mystery shopping professional one needs to have an aptitude for detection. One need not be a detective, but should definitely have some spying skills. It is very important for an investigating agent to remember the faces, relate names and other details to these faces. He should be able to recognize a face that he could just catch a glimpse of sometime ago. He should have a photographic memory as his work requires him to recall and report whatever he has observed in the retail outlet with hundred percent precision to the reporting authorities. Any memory lapses will result in distortion of the observed facts and hence result in an altered feedback.
As it is not possible for any person to remember anything seen, said or heard with hundred percent accuracy, it is a good idea to make notes immediately after leaving the scene, because taking notes while still in the scene will raise suspicion and the very purpose of his visit will be marred. The next most desirable skill for a mystery shopping professional is an ability to act. One need not be an actor of the Hollywood genre but a bit of an actor in him will enable him to artfully disguise his true identity, which is an essential criterion for this job.
The employing organizations take people who clearly understand instructions, grasp the essence of the instructions and exactly know what to do. The firms are very strict. They believe in giving out instructions only once and the appointed agent is expected to absorb those instructions immediately. One cannot afford to be inattentive because he will not get another chance and will be fired if his performance is not up to the mark. The mystery shopping agents should be adept spontaneous thinkers because their interactions with the staff members and consumers are of a dynamic nature and the situations that one finds him in are actually unpredictable. Any blunder in any of the steps might result in both the firm as well as its agent loosing reputation.
A good agent will be able to place himself in the position of a consumer and try to understand what a consumer would want the most from the retail outlets that he visits. He will try to understand a given scenario from the points of view of both the staff members and the consumers. This is where a mystery shopping professional needs to make unbiased judgments about either party. He should be able to clearly communicate with either party without disclosing his true identity and understand their experiences. He should be a good narrator and should have the patience to write authentic reports in detail.
