At the Super Bowl, the first kick of the ball will be captured by the click of a camera capturing a moment of history. The click of a voice recorder is a kick in the right direction for quality assurance. A voice recorder picks up things that humans fail to hear, especially when it is you doing the talking. Humans are capable of many extraordinary things. And throughout history we have adapted to whatever is thrown at us. For instance, when gum was invented, we learned to walk and chew at the same time. However, over a million years of practice, man still cannot talk and listen at the same time. Even in todays modern expectations to be great at multitasking, we fail at talking and listening at the same time. This is why many sales orientated industries encourage their employees to record their sales presentation as a quality assurance activity. This tactic is the only quality assurance method that enables a salesperson to here his sales presentation. Although, talking and listening at the same time is still impossible, at least a salesperson can hear what he had said.
The best public speakers use a voice recorder as a quality assurance tactic to improve their performance. So can you for your sales presentation.
Generally speaking, a voice recorder allows yourself to hear you speak. Now you can hear what your customers hear. In this activity, quality assurance provides evidence that you have annoying pauses, irritating and umms, and poor word choices. Are you asking the right follow up questions in the proper situations? If you are not sure you can review the sales experience from a pocket voice recorder.
During the Super Bowl, quality assurance involves a TV camera and an official who reviews a coach challenge of a questionable call on a play. You can do the same with a small handheld device that fits right in your pocket. Though you cannot see your customers reactions, you can hear them. How are you handling the customers challenges? Are your reactions quick and accurate? If not at least you can react better next time to a similar situation. Practice makes perfect and that is exactly what you are doing, practicing. You may be working from a sales script but not every sales presentation goes by the script. Every once in a while you must improvise to an unexpected situation. But unexpected situations repeat themselves. That is why it is important to record your sales presentation as a quality assurance practice. So when you meet those unscripted situations again, you will be prepared to handle it cleanly, thus closing the sale.
In the self storage industry call center, role play is another form of a quality assurance tactic. Eventually you will need to stop the recorder and put what you have learned from yourself in a virtual real world situation, plus you may get sick of your own voice. So, instead listen to another voice. Practice with a partner with real life sales situations. Give each other feedback as a bonus quality assurance strategy.
Quality assurance not only involves testing and retesting products for quality and safety, it involves testing and retesting yourself so you can offer your customers the best quality in service.
