More and more companies are opting to use mystery shopping to ensure that their customer service standards and brand communication are in line with decided corporate strategy and vision. This technique involves using an undercover agent going into retail premises or other customer interface areas posing as prospective buyer for the product or service. They, then, fill out a response form or questionnaire along with general opinions and comments. These reports are, then, analyzed to determine if there is any retraining, display or rehiring needs that can improve customer satisfaction.

Where Is Undisclosed Shopping Most Popular

Any customer service related area like telecalling or retail sales benefits the most from this technique. It has been noted that even announcing the use of secret shoppers can increase productivity and sales interaction considerably since nobody wants to be singled out for criticism. The recorded conversation or report if shared sensitively with the employees can help everyone benefit from the key findings. But it is important to take the employees into confidence since the very beginning so that they do not end up thinking that it is an initiative against them rather than for the benefit of the company as a whole.

Why The Need For The Undercover Agent

Try as we may, there is no way to discover real employee behavior if an insider were to judge it. Employees will always be on their best behavior if they know that they are being judged. Also internal people often develop blind spots to faults and weak areas in respect to their company. Contrastingly, not only do the researchers answer the questions included in the report, they can also give their opinions and open ended feedback on areas not covered in the questions. Another great advantage of mystery shopping is studying the competitive behavior and trends. Company employees walking into a competitive brand will be identified as such and not get the required information that a neutral observer can.

What Are The Business Advantages

Mystery shopping helps understand the problems in the customer service. By determining gaps or related factors affecting customer relations, companies can over time try and improve through training and other interventions. Not only will this translate into more loyal customers switching brands less often, they will also lose relatively less business from unhappy customers. There will be better word of mouth for the company, and sales will consequently improve. On the other hand, if the service is allowed to deteriorate, it is only a matter of few seconds before the consumer takes his or her business elsewhere.

How Expensive Is Mystery Shopping

Quality Assurance costs are best treated as an investment and not an expense. Hiring people to pose as secret shoppers is actually not very expensive especially when you compare it to the opportunity cost of losing customers. Even if you think you have sufficient business today to avoid expenses on quality improvement, it is important to stay a step ahead of competition by providing more value for the buck. If you have more than one department that needs mystery shopping initiatives, you can start with one, and then, do the rest in stages. You will be able to see the benefits almost immediately.

In summary, quality is no longer negotiable for the customer. They expect it by default. For some reason, if you have managed to get by without quality assurance measures, you are extremely lucky. To sustain and grow ones business, it is important to ensure that ones customer delivery is near perfect. For that matter, mystery shopping is a great way of keeping tab. Remember that every customer who is not satisfied can cost a company up to thousands of dollars in lost business, not to mention damaged reputation.

Many people believe it is fun to do mystery shopping . It is often viewed as an easy job where the shopper visits an establishments, does some shopping, certain amount of spying and then reporting to the employing. After some weeks getting paid along with bagging the goods for which the shopping is done. But is it really so? Is the task so easy? This is the question that haunts the mind of novices. Newcomers who are serious about their assignments do not want to take chances by taking the job easy. This is indeed not easy and those who do not take the assignments seriously are often unsuccessful. After a few visits and reporting, either they are dropped by the hiring company or they themselves surrender. Mystery shopping is not easy. How can it be easy when you are judging someone elses performance? Based on your reports someone may lose their job, so how can you just fool around? You need to be serious with your work.

The job of mystery shopping may not be like other jobs, that binds fixed hours. This is easy and provides some convenient timing. But that does not mean that you will play around and take things easily. Shoppers who are on a mission should understand that they are not critics and they are not there to find faults. They need to be very careful with their observations and work, as they are doing the tough work of judging some ones performance. If you are unsure about your observation, you are free to visit the establishment some other time, but just ensure that the report you are providing is accurate and correct.

In a mystery shopping assignment the shopper is liable to work well and responsibly towards the company also for which he is working. The shopper is the representative of the company and he needs to take care that his identity is not disclosed. Suppose you visit a restaurant on an assignment and the waiter recognizes and understands that you are an uncover shopper. What happens next? He becomes aware and may be alerts the others too in the establishment. The hired shopper is not able to perform is job and his mission is lost forever. The employing company does not desire this. The shopper has to work intelligently and diligently for the company so that the mission is accomplished.

Whenever you are sent on a mystery shopping assignment, you are supposed to provide a detailed description and account of your observation, so that a detailed report can be prepared. It is the responsibility of the shopper to observe everything and if he cannot remember everything that he sees, it is best to keep small notes, with the help of which he can prepare reports at a later period. It is important that the information and observations provided by you is complete in all respects so that a conclusion can be drawn from it. If your observation is such that a detail study cannot be made, it is assumed that your work is incomplete. It is of no use to the company, so it is best to avoid this kind of assignment. If any report is made it has to be complete and detailed so that there is no scope for doubts and misunderstanding, which can result in any kind of wrong reports.

These jobs can be for anything from grocery shopping to storage unit rental shopping.

No matter how good your retail unit is doing or even your self storage or restaurant is doing, there are chances and scope of its doing much better. Just as the parents of a child keep insisting that a little more effort given and the kid will certainly do better-in a similar way owners of establishments can do better. There is no limit to success. If you are thinking that you have reached the maximum sales level or best in terms of quality, then you must think again. Is it really so? Isnt there any more chances to improve. Just try out mystery shopping and you may change your opinion.

It is a myth that mystery shopping is done by units which are not doing well. If you observe the recent trends undercover shopping is used by all industries and even small scale units. Who does not want to make profits? If spending just a few dollars can do miracles then it is wise to try out the disguised shoppers. There are many reluctant owners who are not comfortable with the idea of their own employees being spied upon. This is usually done for the benefit of the company and indirectly it gives a boost to the employees. If the company does well, the employees stand to benefit too, as their incentives and bonuses tend to increase too. There are very few employees who resist mystery shopping . They understand that it is the benefit of them and they stand to gain in the long run, so why stop it.

There are several techniques employed by the companies that carry on disguised shopping assignments. Some of these techniques, such as the use of video cameras are usually not approved by the companies as they feel that there is an invasion in the privacy of the lives of their employees. However, the use of videos has become one of the best ways to do mystery shopping . This is one of the best proofs of the behavior of the employees. If such techniques are used then the problem of manipulation in the reports submitted by the shoppers can also be avoided. Shoppers who carry on the shopping, usually make reports later, instead they take mental notes of the observation.

There is another myth associated with mystery shopping which is often referred to as undercover shopping or shopping in disguise. As the name suggest there are many people who do not like to do this kind of job, because they feel they do not get due recognition. This is not true. Yes, in this kind of assignment you cannot disclose your identity. You are just playing a part, but just that mean that you are losing your identity? You can of course identify yourself, but the difference is that you need to disclose your identity as a shopper and not as a hired shopper. If you do so, your work wont be a success. But this is what you are supposed to do. This is why you are there. Moreover you are doing your job and you are being paid for it.

It is the work of the shopper to visit a restaurant or a retail unit, pose as a customer, make some purchases and make an observation about the ambience, services, products and people who are over there. The main job is to see if the customers are being taken proper care of. All this is put down in a report and submitted to employing company.

Mystery shopping is a quite well known and popular method used for market research purpose. The business houses or retailers can acquire information about their products and service using this tool. Depending on the reports based on this information, the company can develop their plan for future days. Of late, this concept has become the most useful method to evaluate overall performance. The practical application of this concept is going to be very helpful for the entrepreneurs or for the managers having overall store responsibility. From this information, you will be able to know that how your business including your stuff and product or service is performing at the industry.

The concept of mystery shopping is very simple. The service provider company will send trained professional to the business place. He will behave like a normal customer, so that nobody at the shop could guess out his intention. While keeping his identity secret, he will search for information. The company will provide him a checklist on what to notice at the shop. At the time of shopping, he might have to interact with the stuffs or with the client service facility, to check the attitude of these people. He will also look for the layout or the neatness of the outlet. Depending on the type of business, the technique will also get modified to some extent. Shoppers are sent on assignment to assignments ranging from vehicle storage to dental appointments and everything in between.

Once this professional shopper is done with his first part of mystery shopping , he will move over to the second part. The second part is little difficult, as this requires to memorize the experience and write a report on that. Many shopping companies only require filling up the checklist form or the questionnaire after shopping, whereas some companies do ask for a detail or concise write up on his experience of shopping. The checklist normally contains different type of information, like how the store is arranged, does the place look neat and clean, how are the products displayed, how much helpful and supportive are the employees and so on.

With the output of a mystery shopping procedure, the service provider companies generate a database having these different types of information on the business. From this database they create various types of reports and graphical analysis or their client. Checking these reports and graphical models the entrepreneur or store manager can easily get an idea on the performance of their business. Using these reports, the business owners can identify the strengths and weaknesses of his business. Thus, he can plan out his next steps, for firming the weak points and to make the strength more strong.

Recently mystery shopping has become a popular way to earn something extra and to enjoy fun of shopping. Especially to those people, who love to shop until they drop. A professional shopper will earn a payment for each of his assignment. On top of this, the cost of the product or service he will buy at the shop will be reimbursed by the shopping company. Thus, he can keep these items for his personal usage just at no expense. The work is very much flexible. You can choose any favorable time for the shop. This feature has made this profession more popular to the housewives or the persons having other duties to perform.

However, this profession is not going to pay so much money, that one can run his livelihood. Though there are few people, who has taken the whole business seriously, and they pay tremendous effort to make their attempt a successful one.

If you are looking for mystery shopping services then you must be doing it for finding a way to spend your free time or to bolster the performance of your business. Yes, it is these two categories of people who look forward to such services because it serves them both, and serves them well. This method has proven to be an excellent way to evaluate the condition of business in respect to the response of the customers. At the same time, the method requires a number of people to conduct this evaluation process and this need has generated a good part time job opportunity for those people who do not find enough time for a full time job.

The companies that are involved in businesses that revolve around the customer dealing like retail stores, restaurants and hotels, casinos and hotels, banks, airlines, amusement parks, storage buildings etc. often find it hard to judge the standard of service that it is offering to the customers. Though they have internal evaluations, they still want the feedback from the customers and preferably about the ground situation at the establishments. The conventional methods have failed to give the correct picture and this has prompted the companies to opt for new ways. Mystery shopping services have generated that new way of evaluation. The results that this method has given have made this a darling of the service industry.

Those looking for a job to do in the free time also find the mystery shopping services useful. The most benefited section of the people who find this method is the stay at home mothers. They are the people with the oddest timings for any free time. So they find it difficult to find any regular job. This job is such that it can be done at ones free will and time. A shopper with the agency can choose an assignment as per his or her convenience. This enables the mother to do a job only if she finds that she will be able to complete it on time. Being a freelancing job, there is no compulsion that she will have to do a certain number of jobs in a certain time period and this flexibility is what every stay at home mother prefers.

Others who are drawn to this job the retired persons, who have ample time at their disposal and if they want to spend some of this time by working, they should approach the mystery shopping services . The experience of these people gathered over a long period of time in many industries is useful to many and the special shopping can be one of the beneficiaries. This is why some companies prefer to engage these people for a correct evaluation.

On the other end of the spectrum the youth is represented by the students who can earn some extra money to supplement their educational expenses. Worldwide the youth is the target for the many companies to sell their product and services and who could be the better evaluators than the youth themselves.

The end beneficiaries of the mystery shopping services are the companies. The businesses that shine most are those that stay ahead of the customers expectations and to find out more about this expectation the special shopping programs have been found to be the most appropriate. Companies usually hire these agencies to stay ahead of their competitors in terms of client service and other benefits.

Welcome to the PhoneSmart call center blog. We offer an insider view of the mystery shopping industry.

We have all heard of the saying the customer is always right. In customer service this is true even if you think the customer is wrong. I think a big part of customer service is making the customer feel that you have done everything to satisfy them. The companies that rate the best in customer service do their best to insure their staff is dedicated to that task. Cellular Solutions took a big hit in the customer service area.

I bought a new cell phone from EBay a couple months ago. I was in the transition from moving and I lost my charger to the phone. A friend and I went to the mall to get a charger for the phone. We didn’t want to get the charger directly from the cell phone company because it would be a little bit more expensive. To make a long story short, the charger didn’t work for the phone. We tried to charge the phone for about one week. In their defense, they did post a no refund policy. However, it couldn’t be seen unless you were right up on the sign. We brought the charger back to get either a refund or an exchange. We showed the sales person the charger and the phone. He plugged the phone up to the charger tester. I tried to show the sale person that even though the phone said battery charging the phone wasn’t actually charging. The sales person went on to say that he couldn’t do anything for me. He also accused of me of breaking the charger before I brought it back. There was several customer service lessons learned from this situation that will also apply to secret shopping business.

First, the sales person didn’t listen to the problem that I was having. He was too concerned about proving that charger did work. He also was unprofessional when he accused me of breaking that charger and bringing it back just to get a refund. I understood the no refund policy but he offered no solution to satisfy the customer. I believe when you work in customer service, you should always be professional. I believe that you should always try to make the customer feel that you have done everything possible to satisfy the situation. Cellular Solutions was represented in a bad light from poor customer service from one sales person. You should be careful of how you represent your company because word of mouth can really go a long way to make or break a company’s reputation. Every sales person can take advantage of their own good and bad experiences to improve their sales techniques.

Expert customer service will nearly always result in sales increases no matter if you are selling cell phones, storage units or mystery shopping.

Sarah Little PhoneSmart’s secret shopping guru offers this insight to our business blog.

Welcome to the PhoneSmart call center blog with entries for mystery shop and the secret shopping business.

At the end of the month there are always lots of tasks waiting to finish up, as well as ongoing tasks that need maintaining. Some of these have to be done sooner or before others can be done. There is always some excitement lurking in the secret shopping industry.

It’s important in any job to recognize which tasks have priority over others. Keeping up with the secret shop and on top of self-storage industry news and the storage business blog and knowing which day-to-day jobs can be pushed back and which ones need attention ASAP. I feel especially rushed this month because I’m going on a short trip over the weekend. Not being here on the last day of the month means that I have to be prepared. Not only do I have to wrap everything up quickly, but also I have to get the new month rolling.

So far, I’m on track with what I needed to get accomplished, I have even been able to draft this entry for our self storage blog, but I can’t help feel that those one or two things I overlooked are just waiting for me to discover them at the last minute. I believe in lists! I live by them- at least at work. But sometimes I think about what I need to write down at a time when I can’t write it down, and all I can remember later is that there was something I was suppose to remember. As my grandma says, It will eventually all work itself out in the wash.

Sarah Little, Secret Shopping Executive, gives us a peek into the life of a mystery shopper.

Welcome to PhoneSmart’s secret shopping blog, the true tales of the mystery shopping industry.

Secret shopping is a great job for me because each month offers a new beginning. I feel refreshed, closing the last month and getting to start anew. But closing the month isn’t always as simple as just closing a door. The secret shopping trends in our own office seem to go that we usually have the same 3 or 4 self storage calls clinging on to the very last moment.

Unlike some of our competitors, we don’t give up until we’ve reached who it is we are secret shopping. Sometimes it’s trying to reach a part time employee that only works a few hours a week that proves to be the most difficult. If the employee is busy or on the property showing a storage unit the may not answer the phones and we may miss them.

At times I feel like my role in the mystery shopping industry is the cat and the employees are the mouse. I’m chasing them. Sometimes I catch them, but sometimes they duck into a hole. It seems like there are more holes, or maybe storage units, to duck into near the end of the month.

I start holding my breath around the 24th or so, and by the 1st I’m gasping for air. I get a few weeks of down time before I have to start crunching again. It took a while to figure out the best routine when learning how to mystery shop, but now things go pretty smoothly.

Welcome to the secret shopping blog, our diary of the secret shopping and mystery shopping fields.

I went to the doctor early this morning, and at the end of the visit they sent me to the ‘blood draw’ office. So, I went, hoping that it wouldn’t hurt too badly. I walked into the room, and there were 3 other people waiting. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the man drawing the blood was cheerful. He smiled at everyone and made conversation with them while he was with them. I watched, and no one seemed to bat an eye as he poked them. I sighed a breath of relief and silently thanked him in my mind. I was the last person waiting, and as he was finishing up with the young lady just before me another nurse walked into the room.

She was not in the same cheerful mood, and it was very evident. She sombered into the room, not even picking up her feet, as if to say, “I really don’t want to be here.” Her breathing was huffy and she slumped over only half awake. It was early in the morning, so it is possible that she truly was only half awake; which is not a comforting sign coming from a person about to put a needle in someone’s arm. Then I panicked because I realized I was the only one left waiting. Everyone else had already gone and left with a smile on their face.

She picked up the small piece of paper I had given the receptionist and everything slowed down as she read, “Saaaarrrraaahhhh.” Reluctantly, I stood up and followed her into the small little room. She worked silently at getting all the appropriate tools, but she was really screaming “I would rather be somewhere else!” As she opened the drawers, she slammed them shut and threw down the glass vile. I remember thinking to myself that I was surprised it didn’t break. She went through all the procedures, still not saying a word. Then, she stuck a piece of gauze on my arm and sternly said, “Hold this.” I got up, said thank you, and left.

‘They” say that something like 90% of our communication is non-verbal, but rather body language and tone inflection. And we can all think of a time when someone said one thing, but their voice and body said the opposite. In the medical profession it is extremely important to make your patient feel comfortable. But on any business level it is equally important to make your customers feel comfortable and appreciated. Saying “thank you” is great, but it can also be insulting if someone says it insincerely by blurting it out and rolling their eyes.

I do not think that my nurse intended to make me fearful or uncomfortable. However, I do believe that the ‘nice’ man chose to be so happy and comforting. In a rental business of any sort there are always some extreme situations we see tenants deal with. If they feel comfortable and appreciated by you or your associates, they will most likely become a loyal customer. So, I submit to you that we should all learn from my lesson and try to communicate, in every way, a positive and comforting mood while at work, and at home.

Sarah
