  • Save Money At Self Storage
By admin on August 4, 2010 | No Comments Comments

If you are trying to save yourself a little bit of money as you are calling around for your self storage unit, then there are a few things that you are going to want to keep in mind.  Sure, you can grab yourself a few discounts and hope for the best, but your results are going to be a lot better if you follow the system that I propose.  By following this system, you are going to be able to rest assured that you have saved yourself as much money as possible at the end of the day.

The first thing that you are going to want to do, here, is make sure that you are reading the classified ads in your local paper.  If a property is trying to rent its self storage units out very quickly, then you might find that they are posting smaller little ads in the classifieds section of the local paper.  Of course, these are units that should always catch your eye, because you are going to be able to save yourself quite a bit of money when you decide to use one of these.  Just be sure that it is going to be able to fit all of your needs, and you are golden.

Moving on, here, you are go;ing to want to be sure that you are checking all of the corporate websites of the companies that are in your local area.  Sure, you can check around on the price aggregators, but a lot of the time, you are going to find that the biggest companies in your area only offer their coupons on their own sites.  Thus, before you begin to call around, you are going to want to be sure that you have checked all of these sites, and that you have printed out the coupons that you have found on them.  Have them in your hands as you call around to get your first round of pricing information.  In my personal experience, I have always found the best specials hosted on these kinds of proprietary websites.

Of course, you are also going to want to be sure that you are checking around for the facilities that have short term leases.  The best way for you to save money, here, is to make sure that you are not commiting yourself to a long stay that you are not going to need.  If you call around and find yourself a month to month lease, then you are not going to have to worry about getting stuck with your unit for longer than you had wanted.  You will be able to rest assured that you are not spending a dime too much on your self storage unit at the end of the day.

Finally, reader, you are always going to want to be sure that you at least stop in at some of the larger aggregate sites.  These sites are going to spend all of their time hunting down deals, so they are a great way to make sure that you have not left any stones unturned, as the saying goes.  You should not base all of your research on these sites, but they are nice to use every now and again.

And there you have it, reader.  Savings are not hard to come by when you know what you are doing.

  • Hiring Self Storage Managers
By admin on July 27, 2010 | No Comments Comments

Are you trying to hire a new property manager for your self storage property?  Are you concerned that you are not going to pick the right candidate for the position?  If so, then there are a few simple things that you should keep in mind as you are reviewing the applications that are coming your way.  Sure, running a self storage property is not the most complicated thing in the world, but that does not mean that you should not comb through your applicants with a fine brush.  At the end of the day, when your self storage property is running better than ever, you are going to thank yourself and pat yourself on the back for putting some of that extra work in.

First and foremost, reader, you are going to have to be sure that you are hiring someone who works well with other people.  Chances are that your property manager is going to be dealing with everything that goes down on your property.  If you need repairs, and you need someone to be there dealing with the repairman, then you are going to have to rely on your property manager.  If you make most of your sales in the front office, rather than over the phone, then you are going to have to be able to rely on your property manager as someone who can close the deal when the time comes.  Of course, the best way to get a feel for whether or not your applicant is going to work well with others is to call him or her in for an interview.  If they do not interview very well, then you might not want to use them as a salesperson or a property manager.

Moving on, here, you are always going to want to be sure that you are hiring someone who has a little bit of experience dealing with your field.  As a self storage property manager, they are going to have to be in charge of handling some money, conducting simple repairs, and helping move people into their units.  Several other fields are going to give your applicants these kinds of experiences, so you are going to want to keep your eyes open for them.  If they have ever worked in property management at ALL, then you are going to want to give them a shot.  Residential property management is a different enterprise, sure, but the experience is highly relevant.  So, too, is restaurant management, though you might not think so at first.  Those who have experience in restaurant management are very used to dealing with people on a face to face basis, and they are also used to the process of responsibly handling money.  So before you write people off of your list, be sure that you are taking their past experience into careful consideration.  You never know when someone is going to break out and really surprise you with their skills.

At the end of the day, it is very important that you pick the right property manager for your position.  If you choose the wrong person, i.e. someone who is not well equipped to handle the work, then the performance of your entire property is going to suffer.  Review your applications carefully, and be sure that you are not forgetting to follow up on any of the promising leads that are coming your way.

  • Take The Pain From Self Storage Shopping
By admin on July 15, 2010 | No Comments Comments

Shopping around for a self storage unit can be a major pain in the neck if you do not know what you are doing.  I mean, I cannot even tell you how many times customers have told me about the bad experiences that they have had looking around for the perfect unit.  Of course, what these customers have in common is that they did not give themselves enough time to actually shop around and find a unit that fits their needs well.  If you would like to move into the unit that is actually going to work out well for you, then you are going to have to be sure that you are taking my advice nice and seriously.

First and foremost, reader, you have to be sure that you are giving yourself enough time to shop around for the unit that is going to suit your needs.  This, I have to say, is the biggest mistake that self storage customers commit.  Thinking that they do not care about the unit that they rent, they only give themselves a few days to shop around.  Lo and behold, they usually end up panicking and renting a unit that is not actually going to suit all of their needs.  Of course, if you want to avoid landing yourself in hot water like this, then you should give yourself a solid two to three weeks to shop around, gather prices, tour sites, and what have you.  You are going to pat yourself on the back at the end of the day when you are sitting in a unit that actually meets your needs.

Of course, I cannot adequately express the importance of taking tours of the properties that you are considering.  If you do not show up and take a look at your property in person, then you are not going to know if you are actually going to feel comfortable with it when it comes to storing your belongings for real.  In these regards, you really have to rely on your proverbial gut to lead you in the right direction.  And it is pretty hard to do that if you have no idea what your property looks like.  Remember, here, that a safe property is going to be maintained well.  If it is not, then you have to question whether or not your property manager really cares about keeping your belongings safe.  And I think that you already know whether or not he cares.

Finally, reader, you always have to be sure that you are taking the time to find all of the discounts that you are going to need to save yourself as much money as possible.  Sure, you can just pay your bill outright, but where is the appeal in that?  I mean, if you really want to get the most bang for your buck, then you are going to call around until you find a very appealing moving special.  If you can land yourself with a great deal, then you can take all of those savings and treat yourself out to something fun.

When it comes down to renting the self storage unit that is going to keep your belongings the safest, you simply have to be sure that you are giving yourself enough time to shop around and compare your local options.

  • Calgary Self Storage Competition
By admin on July 8, 2010 | No Comments Comments

You may be getting ready to look for Calgary self storage and are thinking that it is going to be simple and easy to get a good space, but you may be in for a surprise. First of all, if you are going to get the best in the area, there are a few things that you will want to keep in mind before you start your search. The first is that you want to really stay away from the practice of only looking for the lowest price. Chances are that the absolute cheapest place in town is not going to be very safe for you to store your belongings in. Storage prices are like gas prices. They should be relatively similar as long as they are in the same area. If you went to a gas station and saw that the place across the street was half the price, they may cause some concern. You probably would not fill up the tank with no questions asked. The same thing should apply to the world of storage. If a Calgary self storage location is half the price of the other locations in town, then that should set off some alarm bells. There are a number of things that could be wrong with the facility.

When looking for a Calgary self storage unit, you will want to make sure that the location is not in an area that will flood from time to time. Nothing would be worse than to open up the door to your unit and find water damage. That would really smell as well. You also want to make sure that the location is going to be safe and secure. Safety and security should be your number one priority. The location should have four basic security features. There should be a pin accessed controlled gate so that only current tenants are able to go in or out. The property should also be surrounded by security fencing. You should also ask about door alarms and video camera surveillance as they will deter theft and catch those in the act.

Even though the Calgary self storage property that you choose will have excellent safety and security, it may be wise to go ahead and get some extra coverage to ensure that you are compensated in the event of damage or loss of your belongings. If you ask the manager, they should be more than happy to go over a few plans so that you can have that extra peace of mind that you are looking for. Keep in mind that even if you have existing homeowners or renters insurance that you could pick up additional coverage at the site.

One last piece of advice for you as you are looking for the best that the Calgary self storage scene has to offer is to inquire about a special. A lot of places will offer a special and some will not. However, if you ask the manager you may be able to work out a deal so that you can get the first month free or at least a discount on the first month or two. Be careful when agreeing to a special so that you are not locked into any type of long term contract. You want to make sure that everything is month to month.

  • Create Your Own Self Storage Business
By admin on July 5, 2010 | No Comments Comments

Are you trying to find ways to make a little bit of extra money on the side?  Are you sick and tired of barely scraping by?  Do you have so little spending money that you spend all of your free time locked away in the house?  If so, then you might want to consider a few entrepreneurial pursuits.  No, you do not have to get out there to take out a loan.  No, you do not have to toss what little spending money that you have into starting up your own side company.  What you can do, though, is small little odd jobs here and there.  Believe it or not, these are the kinds of jobs that you can actually find nowadays.

Do you have a lot of spare room in your basement and garage?  If so, then you can rent it out as self storage space.  For real, you may stand to make a killing if you are willing to surrender some of this space.  Sure, you are going to have to convince your customers that you are trustworthy.  If, however, you keep your house in great condition, and you are able build up some good rapport with them, then you are not going to run into any problems in these regards.  Your personal storage space can really earn you some money if you plan it out carefully.

Maybe you have an extra bedroom in your house that you are not using?  If so, then you can try renting that out as a miniature apartment.  When I was looking around for housing a few months ago, I found tons of these listings out there.  Typically speaking, they were just spare bedrooms in larger homes.  If I was lucky, I found a listing that came with its own bathroom, but not all of them were this way.  Even if you think that your spare room is too small, you might as well list it and see if you can pull anyone in.  Just be sure that you conduct a credit check and a background check before you agree to let them live in your house.  Likewise, be sure that you are interviewing your candidates before you make any promises.  The last thing that you are going to want, here, is to let a drug abuser or an overall bad person into your own home.

If you are still unsure of how you are going to make some side money, then you can head out to your local self storage facilities to attend a few auctions.  Over the years, I have found that these are a great way to make some extra money.  If you can manage to win a unit that has plenty of valuable stuff inside of it, then you are going to be able to resell all of it for a considerable profit.  If you have never attended a self storage auction before, then all you are going to have to do is check your local classified ads.

There are plenty of ways for you to make some extra money when you are a bit strapped for cash, and these are but a few of them.  Of course, if you it down and put your mind to it, you are going to be able to come up with plenty of additional ways to make some extra money.

  • Find Self Storage Coupons and Deals
By admin on July 1, 2010 | No Comments Comments

I have got to tell you, reader, I am beginning to feel as though I have become a true master of coupons.  No matter what I am looking to buy, be it a service, a product, or anything else, I am always able to find myself the savings that I want in very little time at all.  Of course, this is an acquired skill, reader.  It is something that I learned over the years, and, really, when I was strapped for cash, I learned it out of necessity.  If you are looking to follow in my footsteps, do yourself a favor and keep a few of the following tips in mind.

The first thing that you have to accept, reader, is that the savings are never enough.  When you are shopping around for coupons, you are not going to want to stop at the very first location that offers you a special.  You are not going to want to rush yourself into any commitments, here.  Do yourself a favor and open up a spreadsheet in your computer, and as you are shopping around, be sure that you input all of the information that you are getting into your spreadsheet.  If you do a good job, you will be able to keep track of all of the specials that you are offered, here.  You will not even have to worry about digging through that mound of scrap paper to find the information that you wrote down last week.

Of course, you cannot forget about the internet when it comes to finding the best coupons that are out there.  Often, companies are going to post specials on the internet, hoping to entice you to use their webpage as frequently as possible.  While you do not have to stick around on these sites for long, it is helpful to check back in every once in a while to see if you are missing out on anything.  I do this with groceries, mostly.  I stop in at the websites before I head out to the store to make sure that I am not missing out on anything.  And I have to say, over the years, I have really saved myself quite a bit of money using this system.

Finally, reader, you are always going to want to be sure that you are checking the old fashioned source of coupons, the Sunday paper.  Believe it or not, many companies are still posting the majority of their coupons in the paper, hoping that you are going to forget to cut them out.  If you keep your eyes peeled as you are making your way through the paper, you are really going to be able to win yourself some substantial savings.  Also, never forget to check in with the paper version of the yellow pages.  Often, you will find some specials hiding around in there as well.

When you commit to saving yourself as much money as possible, you really do have to commit to your plan.  Especially when you begin to see that you are going to have to spend some more time shopping around than normal, the temptation to turn around in your tracks is going to be somewhat strong.  Of course, if you stick in there, push through it, and make sure that you are not forgetting to shop around, then your wallet is going to thank you at the end of the day.
