A Mysteryshopper is Your Personal Trainer
-
Professional golfers develop bad habits and get into slumps, but they are lucky to have coaches to help point out what is wrong with their swing. Most sales people should be so lucky, to have a coach to tell them what they are doing wrong with their sales presentation. After all it would help them close more sales and earn higher commissions. A golf coach is like a mysteryshopper. Both evaluated their protege, score the performance, and provide feedback. You would never survive the Pro Tour on your own, so why would you thing you could survive sales on your own?
Just like golfers, salespeople pick up bad habits and go through slumps. Sales presentation may become routine so it ends up being dry and indifferent. Though the salesperson might not realize that he or she lacks energy or enthusiasm, the customer does. However, the customer is not going to tell the salesperson to liven it up. The customer will just walk out and leave the salesperson wondering what was wrong with that guy, but not a mysteryshopper. A mysteryshopper not only picks up on the salespersons curbed enthusiasm, he will tell the salesperson about it.
A professional golfer takes his coaches advice to heart. If a golfer is picking up his head during a swing, the golfer wants to know. He wants to know because he is competitive and wants to win. So the same attitude should carry over to salespeople. A sales person should not be offended or discouraged by a comment made by a mysteryshopper. That feedback should be absorbed and squeezed out during the next potential sale. Sales is a competitive occupation and every salesperson should want to win every sale. So a salesperson always should want to know where he or she can improve to stay competitive.
Even the best golfers need lessons and training, so why would any salesperson think they are too good for a mysteryshopper? Well, they should not. In other words, we cannot be successful on our own. Every successful person surrounds himself with supporting people. That is the core responsibility of a mysteryshopper, to offer support. Even if you reach the top of the sales pyramid, you need support to remain in power. A mysteryshopper is there to tell you about your strong points and weak points.
There is a misconception that a poor score given by a mysteryshopper is a failing grade. Never look at it that way. Think of a poor score as an opportunity to learn and do better. Take the feedback given by the mysteryshopper to practice and ace the evaluation the next time. However, keep in mind that the main purpose of a mysteryshopper is to enhance the customers experience. And if you can succeed in that, royalties and accolades will be awarded to you.
Sometimes the best sales people are blinded by their bad habits and sales slumps. The blame for poor performance is usually directed outwardly. This is the other purpose for a mysteryshopper, to bring a salespersons ego back down to Earth.
